The original concept for GM place was to have hockey rink that could transform to Olympic sized hockey rink (larger ice area than a NHL rink) with an adjustable seating and boards. However as a cost savings measure this idea was scrapped. Now the arena will have to undergo significant construction to convert it to an Olympic sized rink and to convert it back after the games.
